The Writing Routine that Helped Me Achieve 65k Followers on Medium
It's pretty easy and simple because that's all it takes to help me achieve my writing goals.

At first, I only write when I want to.
The motivation that I had was practicing my English and being consistent with writing. It doesn’t matter whether it’s writing one article per week or per month. But this approach didn’t help me get far enough, especially when I’m first starting out.
I want to become better and improve as a writer. But how?
There is where I started to think about making a writing routine.
I need a system that could help me achieve my writing goals. A consistent daily action that could help me achieve at least 1,000 followers. Then this is where I started to find my routine that helped me achieve 65k followers.
Why This System Works
This system works because it’s so simple that you don’t have to overthink it.
Each step builds on the last, making sure that your content is not only high-quality but also reaches and resonates with the right audience. To be honest, my writing routine is only write, draft, and edit. Nothing fancy.
Maybe that’s why it helped me become consistent easily.
As a result, it helped me build 2000 subscribers on Substack, 65000 followers on Medium, courses, and many more. Without a writing routine, I might get stuck and didn’t grow as a writer. And I don’t want you to have that struggle.
So here’s my writing routine, and you can feel free to use it as well.
My Writing System: Step by Step
1. Write an article
I start with a rough draft.
At this step, don’t overthink it and just write. The goal is to get your ideas on paper, no matter how messy they seem at first. Sometimes, I don’t use any outlines for my articles and let my hand type. But now I often use outlines to help me structure the flow of the article.
Tips for writing:
Focus on one main idea per article.
Write as if you’re talking to one person.
Write until you are done; don’t procrastinate for tomorrow.
The first draft is about creating.
Then we will refine it in the next step.
2. Drafting (2–3x Drafts)
I go through each article at least two to three times.
I did this because I know every day I have a different mood or energy when I write. Sometimes I have problems that affect my focus. The other day I might feel pretty motivated and positive. This all could affect my writing words and style overall.
So, drafting helps me to make sure before it is published, it would be great for my reader.
Here’s what I focus on during this phase:
Clarity: Are my points easy to understand?
Engagement: Does the introduction hook the reader?
Value: Is the content actionable and useful?
Structure: Does it make sense from this paragraph to another?
Each draft gets a little closer to the final polished version.
3. Editing
Editing is a dessert.
This is the phase where I add visual elements, formatting, and finishing touches to make the article shine. There’s nothing much to do here because you already did all the drafting before. So, what you might want to focus on is format, structure, images, tags, and P.S.
Key editing tasks:
Add images or graphics to break up text.
Write a compelling P.S. at the end for additional engagement.
Choose tags strategically to reach the right audience
Use a format that could help the reader understand easily.
Editing is about optimizing the reader’s experience.
4. Publishing
Hit the publish button.
If you are starting out, just hit the publish button. Don’t spend too much on drafting, and be brave enough to share your craft. Because the more you write and publish, the more you will learn and practice yourself in writing too.
But more than that, consistency is key here.
Publishing regularly builds trust and keeps your audience engaged.
My publishing routine:
Set a specific day and time for publishing.
Share the article across other platforms, like for me, Substack. (But I publish the newest article on Substack, not on Medium.)
Publishing isn’t the end of the process.
It’s the beginning of engagement.
5. Replies (engaging in comments)
The final step in my system is engaging with readers.
My readers helped me A LOT in my writing journey. Without them, I won’t be able to achieve where I am right now. So, engage with your readers. Responding to comments builds community, deepens connections, and encourages repeat readers.
Tips for replying:
Answer questions with easily understandable answers.
Acknowledge compliments or insights.
Keep the conversation going by asking follow-up questions.
Remember, your readers are the heart of your success.
Show them you value their time and input.
If I can, you can too.
If you’re serious about building an audience through writing, you need a system.
The process I’ve shared here helped me reach 65K followers, and it can help you too.
Start small. Follow the steps. Refine your process.
With time and consistency, your writing will improve, your audience will grow, and you’ll build the kind of personal brand that helps you achieve your goals.
One thing.
Write your writing routine in the comments. I would love to see your writing routine.
Happy Writing!
